                At the annual meeting, a request was made to share the minutes of the meeting with the entire membership.  The minutes appear below.

 

                Also, it�s that time of the year again.  Dues ($45 for an individual/$67.50 for a couple) are now due.  Please send your check to the League of Women Voters of Litchfield County, P.O. Box 899, Litchfield, CT 06759.  Already paid?  Thank you!  Not sure whether you have paid?  Please contact our treasurer, Bernie Harrington; He has the most up-to-date list.

LWVLITCHFIELD COUNTY,INC.

MINUTES OF THE 40TH ANNUAL MEETING

TORRINGTON COUNTRY CLUB, JUNE 17,2009

 

President Horrigan called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m. Pat Donovan was appointed parliamentarian . She also presented the credentials report indicating 15 members were present to constitute a quorum. It is noted some ten or more additional members appeared throughout the meeting.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Betty Katzin's memorial fund in the amount of $500 has been designated the award to the family who reduces its energy consumption the most in the period July,August and September 2009 over the same period in 2008. The award, presented by the LWVLitchfield County,Inc to underscore Betty's commitment to Energy Efficiency, will be announced at the Energy Expo sponsored by Dean Birdsalls' Litchfield High School environmental science classes. The event will take place road race weekend.

 

Donations to League's memorial fund in honor of deceased members are always gratefully accepted, The fund,initiated following the death of League's third president Valerie Vondermuhll, supports League's annual scholarships to a graduating senior at each of five area high schools who has excelled in the study of history and shown an interest in good government through participation in student or town government. Currently $100 is awarded to each selected student.

 

The LWVCT studies for the coming year are: ballot access,election laws and senate vacancies.

 

The LWVCT is preparing a host of events to celebrate its 90th birthday in 2011.

      MINUTES BE APPROVED AT THE FIRST MEETING

      OF THE BOARD IN THE FALL OF 2009.

 

TREASURER'S REPORT- B.Harrington

The balance in the checking and savings account as of June 17,2009 is $10,403.81.

The Treasurer announced the Board has approved maintaining dues at $45 despite PMP payments to LWVCT and US will total $45.70 per member. League will rely on events to raise funds.

Report accepted as read and filed for audit.

 

PORTFOLIO REPORTS;

COPIES OF MOST REPORTS ARE FILED WITH THE SECRETARY'S MINIUTES. SALIENT POINTS FOLLOW.

MEMBERSHIP-I. Forbes reported 71 members to date.

CIVICS AND VOTER SERVICE-J. Bertaccini stated Shepaug High School was the sole school to accept League's invitation to SIR.

18 students were registered to vote at Wamogo High School.

57 persons were registered at UCONN and 5 at League's table at the Charlotte Hungerford's sponsored Homeless Connection Torrington.

Four candidates debates were held in October.

VOICE-D. Butwill stated the VOICE was published three times this past year and noted the Business Center donated 80 copies of each issue for mailing.

PROGRAM-C.Horrigan reviewed the year's events:

Winter-Legislative Interviews-Mary Tavino's home

         New Member reception at Brandywine

         Co-sponsored with OWL-Terry O'Toole led a program

          on data bases for the Congressional Quarterly

         Program Planning

Spring-International Luncheon at CJR with Anthony Piel

         National Popular Vote Meeting at  OWL-luncheon

         Big Issues in Small Towns at Marie Scirica 's home

         Tag Sale in Milton

         40th birthday party-Torrington Country Club.

ACTION-M.Phillips reporting on the long session:

Expanded bottle bill passed; banned use of plastic in baby bottles; ruled environmental friendly cleaning products to be used in the schools; proposed money for dairy farms, historic buildings and open space be set aside. Unhappily there are no funds for this.

No bills passed to protect wetland and water sources.

To date no budget passed.

No election bills passed.

WEBSITE-K.Davis stated she is continuing as webmaster and is dedicated to upgrading the system.

ARCHIVES-M.Lieff remarked League minutes,events and publicity continue to be presented to the Litchfield Historical Society's archives.

FILES-M.Wallace suggested League purchase a file cabinet to keep important League documents safely and readily available to League membners.

Discussion: Members thought a committee should be appointed to select materials to be filed and to set up and maintain a system.

Consensus was to continue presentations to the Historical Society but also keep copies of significant decisions and events with the League.

LEAGUE PURCHASE A CABINET TO FILE IMPORTANT LEAGUE DOCUMENTS AND ESTABLISH A COMMITTEE TO SET UP A FILING SYSTEM AND SELECT DOCUMENTS TO BE FILED AND MAINTAINED.

 

Laura Beyer volunteered to design a filing system. It was agreed the files would be kept at the current president's residence and be available to all members.

 

BUSINESS OF THE ANNUAL MEETING:

 

The proposed budget of $7537.50 was MSP/U by D.Butwill /K.Davis.

 

PROGRAM-

Discussion: The original recommended proposal to study Regionalization was considered, discussed and withdrawn. Members  present stated community access to Cablevision in this area was an immediate concern and expressed an intent to adopt a study on the problem.

President Horrigan thanked members who are leaving the Board for their outstanding and dedicated service.

The Secretary was instructed to cast one vote for the slate.'

 

President Horrigan expressed her appreciation and thanks to the membership for their support and cooperation throughout her first year as president and congratulated everyone on a very successful and rewarding year.

The 40th birthday celebration of the LWVLitchfield County followed. After a buffet luncheon members and guests were entertaineds by Denise Butwill's video of League events and participated in the fun game of "Wait,Wait ,Don't Tell Me" tailored to League history. Guests Sen.Andrew Roraback, SOTS Susan Bysiewicz and Rep. Roberta Willis congratulated League for its conrtibutions to area communities and presented proclamations from the Governor and the SOTS's Office. LWVCT President Jara Burnett was also in attendance. League history and photographs displayed in the Club's foyer were wonderful memorabilia attractions. Marie Wallace concluded the event with a brief history of League's 40 years and a round of "happy birthday".
